3rd Anniversary of UZN San Diego
July 3-5th, 2009

Welcome to
206zulu.com, a multifaceted resource for Seattle, Washington and worldwide Hip Hop, news, networking, music, upcoming events, and community projects. 206 Zulu is the Universal Zulu Nation Seattle Chapter. With members from all corners of the Pacific Northwest, 206 Zulu carries the vision and commitment to unify, preserve Hip Hop culture, educate, and empower our communities.

The Universal Zulu Nation, or UZN is a pioneering force that has been in effect since the inception of Hip Hop itself (1974) and continues to represent and innovate while striving for worldwide peace, equality and empowerment. The four main elements of Hip-Hop are deejaying, emceeing, b-boying/b-girling, and graffiti.

These elements can be expressed both individually and/or collectively and can benefit the community on both local and global levels. These goals however are by no means limited to the art forms of Hip Hop and we look forward to sharing information of health, social awareness and other human resources.

National/International News

Strictly Street - Floor Combat '09
Last June 10-14th, Hip Hoppers from many areas of Southeast Asia gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to participate in what has become one of the largest break battles in the country. This event, produced by MyPartners and the UZN Malaysian Chapter, hosted thousands of people over the course of a five day span which incorporated a 3-on-3 b-boy battle, Malaysia's first ever b-girl battle, performances, live graffiti art, dance workshops, ShiftyMag skateboard competition and after parties.

This event, called Strictly Street – Floor Combat, made national news as reporters from far and wide gathered to attend the press conference held on Wednesday. Special guests were Lord Yoda X, King Khazm, B-boy Orbitron and DJ Gumbeaux from the United States who spoke upon the history and relationship of the UZN and Hip Hop, as well as it's continuing goals in today's time. Following the Q&A was an induction ceremony for the official establishment of the Malaysian Chapter, an effort that took nearly one year to formalize.

The highlight of the event was the Floor Combat competitions, which was judged by dance luminaries, Orbitron from Seattle, Farhan from Singapore and Noel from Indonesia. 2009 marks the first-ever B-Girl battle in Malaysia, which was well received by 1st place winner B-Girl Seven and a capacity crowd. The footwork battle was taken by B-Boy Zen. The 3-on-3 battle proved to be the best yet as 46 teams underwent the two day elimination. The results are as follows- 1st Radikal Forze, 2nd Force 136 Crew and 3rd Floor Tactics.

Crotona Park Jams in the Bronx, NY

PEACE! Last week's Crotona Park Jam was a blast! Even Kid Capri dropped in on July 9th to spin a set alongside Biz Markie, GrandWizzard Theodore and DJ Supreme! Biz even rocked a version of "Mardi Gras" without the bells! He was rumored to have it but no one knew for sure! We can't even begin to list the names of all the legends from each element of Hip Hop culture in the park! Check this clip from Mark Carranceja of Noisemaker Media! Also enjoy Mark's footage from June 4th at Behagen Park (aka 23 Park) of GrandWizzard Theodore, Jazzy Jay, b-boys and more. Click HERE to view photos from Joe Conzo, Francisco Reyes & Res One!

God willing, the weather will hold out on Thursday, July 16 for our 2nd jam of the year featuring a Zulu Nation trinity of pioneering and legendary DJs: Afrika Bambaataa, Kool DJ Red Alert & DJ Jazzy Jay - 3 of the Funkiest DJs we know - all on one stage - rockin the way they did a Bronx River in Hip Hop's earliest years.

We believe that DJs are the show at the park jams. We are so pleased to celebrate our 7th year of featuring DJs who are Hip Hop legends & pioneers as the HEADLINERS! We love the MCs but this is for the DJS! Our goal is to recreate the classic park jams of the 1970s and early 80s and go back to the days when the DJ was the front woman or man!

* The New York Times gave us love online and in print!
* Photos from June and our past 6 years of jams from Joe Conzo, Res One Francisco Reyes and more at www.myspace.com/toolsofwar.

“Masizakhe: Building Each Other”

"Masizakhe: Building Each Other" from Scott Macklin on Vimeo.

“Masizakhe: Building Each Other” follows a group of dynamic young artists from the Eastern Cape city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, who are dedicated to the empowerment of their community through cultural activism.

1994 saw political liberation for South Africa, but now there is a need for cultural liberation. The role of today's cultural activists is to liberate the minds of a people who have been oppressed for centuries under colonialism and its most recent form of apartheid. Author and poet Sindiwe Magona says that the African people "have been left with no tongue of their own... no tongue to call their own." This documentary follows everyday heroes who are reclaiming their history and actively participating in building a future of inclusion. Their tools are spoken word, music, poetry, Hip-Hop culture, and the arts.

Interviews with teachers and principals who were political activists in the 1980s and early 1990s reveal the similarities between the political struggle of the apartheid years and the cultural struggle of today. Some of these teachers are working with cultural activist groups by bringing them into the classroom to help educate people about themselves.
