Holiday P.E.A.C.E Trees Fundraiser

The UmojaFest P.E.A.C.E. Center community invites you to join us in making a difference by supporting our 2nd Annual Holiday Trees for P.E.A.C.E. Fundraiser.

As the Seattle community continues to be torn apart through violence and anger, we must continue to work together for the safety for our families, neighbors, and most importantly, our children.

In the fall of 2008, in the face of a growing youth violence crisis, school closures that disproportionately disenfranchised African-American children, cutbacks in human services due to a bad economy and solutions scarce, representatives of several community based organizations answered President Barack Obamas call to serve by coming together to transform two former crack houses into the UmojaFest P.E.A.C.E Center, a vibrant community based, youth focused cultural center in the heart of Seattles Central District.

The UmojaFest P.E.A.C.E. Center focuses on replacing negative culture with positive culture. The facility includes the audio recording and video production studios, library & reading room, Organic P.E.A.C.E. Garden, office space for community organizations an outdoor stage and more.

Over the past year, the center has brought together many numerous community building events at the site and in the community including Community Issues, Dinners, Spring Fest & Green Organizers Mixer, Youth Leadership Retreat, Candidate Forums and more.

We also launched several initiatives and programs including a Womens Empowerment Initiative, Green Light Initiative for Eco Equity & Environmental stewardship and several youth development programs including the Young Kings & Queens and the Hip-Hop Communiversity Summer Academy providing over 50 youth with valuable summer employment, learning and enrichment opportunities.

Additionally, through our Homeless Veterans Street Outreach Support Services the Umojafest Peace Center provided 1300 bed nights, 1500 meals, and referred numerous individuals to drug rehabilitation in the past year.

The end result of the past years efforts was the elimination of the negative hostile environment around the post office. The safe quiet environment created by the efforts of the UmojaFest Peace Center has been a welcome change to all post office employees and neighbors.

Building on the outstanding success of last years Holiday Trees for P.E.A.C.E. fundraiser, we have brought it back for the 2009 holiday season!

If you or someone you know plans to purchase a live Christmas tree this year, what better way to encourage the "Yes We Can!" spirit, than to buy your tree in support of enterprising and hopeful young people?

We have a goal of raising $15,000 by the end of the year. Our specific needs include a furnace with installation and ductwork (winters here!), studio renovation completion, computers for our lab as well as general operating expenses to continue doing the work that we are doing.

We can reach our goal with your support. Trees are priced to fit YOUR budget, you can even name your own price!

Place your order today! Better still, tell all your family, friends, church and other groups about this opportunity to continue being part of the change and let us know HOW MANY TREES should be set aside.

Trees will be available for pick up at the center daily from 9am-9pm starting Nov. 27th. The UmojaFest P.E.A.C.E. Center is located at 2314 E. Spring St. (24th & Spring St.) in central Seattle. One block south of Union st behind the Post Office.

To place your order today, please call 206.329.1591 or 877.505.6306.

If you do not want a tree but would like to support by making a contribution please do so at www.umojafestpeacecenter.com or mail your contribution to:

UmojaFest P.E.A.C.E. Center
PO Box 22328
Seattle, WA 98122

Please reference tax ID#14-1798232 for your tax deductible contribution.
Thank you for your consideration and we hope that you can help us make the promise of change a reality.

Thank you.

Ahki James "TalkSick" Sullivan Passes
By Larry Mizell, Jr. and Ashley Goggins

James TalkSick Sullivan, 28, returned to the essence October 14, 2009 due to complication from the H1N1 virus. Proud to originally hail fom San Franciscos Hunters Point neighborhood, he resided in Washington since 1988. A fierce lover, advocate, and defender of hiphop culture, TalkSick was a proud member of the Universal Zulu Nations Seattle chapter who dedicated his time to community service. A recognizable, friendly, gregarious fixture at NW hiphop shows, TalkSick was also a reknowned hiphop historian with an exhaustive wealth of musical knowledge few could rival. An MC, show promoter, and blogger, TalkSicks favorite MCs of all time were Kool G Rap and KRS One, yet he held a particular affection for rap from his native Bay Area and from Seattle. He was also known for his big sense of humor, big thirst, and blunt, all-too-rare rare candor--and, on occasion, his own deep rhyme skills. Even bigger and deeper than all of that, as anyone who ever met TalkSick will attest, was his heart. His passing is a blow and deep sadness to the Seattle-area hiphop scene, but his life will forevermore be celebrated. Rest In Power, Ahki.

He is survived by his queen, Cassandra, his mother Elizabeth MacDonald, his siblings Rodney Snow, Tom Snow, Jennifer Snow, and his entire 206 Zulu family. If you would like to ease the coast of the hospital bills and funeral on Cassandra please PayPal any memorial donations to quassia_2000@hotmail.com.

Welcome to
206zulu.com, a multifaceted resource for Seattle, Washington and worldwide Hip Hop, news, networking, music, upcoming events, and community projects. 206 Zulu is the Universal Zulu Nation Seattle Chapter. With members from all corners of the Pacific Northwest, 206 Zulu carries the vision and commitment to unify, preserve Hip Hop culture, educate, and empower our communities.

The Universal Zulu Nation, or UZN is a pioneering force that has been in effect since the inception of Hip Hop itself (1974) and continues to represent and innovate while striving for worldwide peace, equality and empowerment. The four main elements of Hip-Hop are deejaying, emceeing, b-boying/b-girling, and graffiti.

These elements can be expressed both individually and/or collectively and can benefit the community on both local and global levels. These goals however are by no means limited to the art forms of Hip Hop and we look forward to sharing information of health, social awareness and other human resources.

UZN plants seeds in Malta

One of the Universal Zulu Nation's newest chapter is working hard to stake its claim in the world-wide organization. Zulu Nation Malta, also known as Hip Hop Malta, is getting major visibility.. What is Malta you ask? Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is a southern European country and consists of an archipelago situated centrally in the Mediterranean, south of Sicily and north-east of Tunisia. Malta is just over 300 km making it one of Europe's smallest and one of Europe's most densely populated countries.

The colonizing chapter, with the leadership of Oliver "Jimbo Thinlegs" Scicluna has gained much support over the course of a year by not just the local Hip Hop community, but by the greater tight-knit society. Jimbo, a disabled b-boy and community organizer sees Hip Hop as an outlet that heals and empowers his community. "Since I am a disabled person from birth I know how these things have helped me grow better though years."

Last month Jimbo and Zulu Nation Malta partnered with an organization called Razzett tal-Hbiberija (The Farm of Friendship) to prooduce an 8 hour telethon event called INSPIRE, a charity effort to raise money for specialized equipment for people with physical disabilities. This national fundraiser was broadcast on the nation's 4 main television channels (TVM "Television Malta", NET TV, ONE TV & Smash TV). From this, UZN Malta developed 3 hours of programming called the Throwdown, a Hip Hop showcase that included a breakdance competition, choreographed dance routines, as well as MC and beatbox performances. This program was one of the most successful of the whole, and generated over 75,000 euros total. For more info, log onto www.hiphopmalta.com

Flyin' Cut Sleeves

Legendary Doc on 1970s Bronx Street "Families"

FLYIN' CUT SLEEVES, completed in 1993, is a 59:44 minute videotape documentary which presents alternating portrayals, from the past (twenty years ago) and the present, of former street gang presidents in the Bronx:  Benjamin "Yellow Benjy" Melendez, The Ghetto Brothers, Ben Buxton, The Savage Nomads,  Nelly "China" Velez, The Savage Nomad Girls, Felipe "Blackie" Mercado, The Savage Skulls and Lorine Padilla.

The project grew out of the experiences of Rita Fecher, the videotape's co-producer, who taught in a South Bronx school in the late 1960's and early 1970's, became intimately involved with the gangs, their leaders, and the leaders' families and began to document their lives.  Their world was the streets, set against a backdrop of uprooted families, cultural alienation, drugs and violence.  Neighborhood teenagers responded by organizing into street groups known to the members as  "families", but labeled in the most alarming terms as violent gangs by the press.

When Rita Fecher returned after twenty years to see what had become of her old friends, she found that they had stayed in the community of their youth, that they were deeply committed to improving conditions there and that they were engaged in helping their own children survive in the hazardous street environment.  Each of them has fought to learn how to function more effectively in American society through continuing education within colleges and educational systems connected to the prison system, in New York City colleges and universities and on-the-job training. They have chosen careers, studies, or community activities in areas of youth and drug counseling, recreation and self-defense.

In fact, the "families" had a stabilizing effect, enabling the youths to cope with their troubled environment and providing their young leaders with a means of exercising authority.   The political climate at the time, movements of national liberation and such organizations as the Black Panthers and Young Lords Party influenced the young gang leaders to aspire to be more than warriors and to become, to some degree, a positive force in their communities.

It is their fervent hope that this documentary will help them to bring attention to the problems faced by them and to their own unique efforts to overcome them.  The documentation of these lives over a twenty year period offers a remarkable perspective on life in the ghetto (spanning four generations), and the means that people devise to cope from the time that they are children to when they serve as parents and role models for a new generation.

Grand Master Roc Raida: 1972 - 2009

[The following information has been supplied and approved by Roc Raida's wife. Thank you in advance for your kind words and sympathy]

Anthony "Grand Master Roc Raida" Williams was born in Harlem New York on May 17th, 1972 to Brenda Williams-Bolling & William Tony

He passed away on Saturday, September 19th, 2009 from a cardiac arrest resulting from injuries he suffered in an accident while training in Krav Maga, a type self defense system that he had been studying weekly for the last two years. He was proud that his 15-year-old daughter, Asia, shared his passion for Krav Maga and was the only girl in their class.

At an early age, Anthony joined the Mt Neboh Baptist Church & was baptized under the leadership of the Late Rev. William D. Gardner. It is at Mount Neboh where he served faithfully during his youth. He was a member of the Children's Choir, the Junior Choir, the Usher Board, and a former mascot for the Male Chorus of which his grandfather, the Late Deacon Early Williams was a member.

Anthony Williams was both African-American and Puerto Rican. He lived most of his life in Harlem but after marrying his soul mate, Tyeasha on June 26, 1997, they moved to the Bronx. Several years ago, they realized their dream of owning a home and relocated their family to Maryland. He encouraged and shared in his wifes dream of one day opening up her own beauty salon.

He began DJing at the age of 12, spinning at local parties around Harlem. By 1995, Roc Raida represented the United States at the DMC World DJ Championships and won! He was the first DJ from New York City to hold this title and was automatically inducted into the DMC/Technics DJ Hall of Fame. Throughout his life, he lived his passion - being a professional Hip Hop DJ. He was blessed to have touring the world as his day job. Williams was honored to have worked with recording artists including Showbiz & AG, Lord Finesse, Kool G Rap and most recently, he toured exclusively with Busta Rhymes.

Although his family called him Ant (short for Anthony), he became known worldwide as legendary DJ Roc Raida. In 1999, Grand Master status was bestowed upon him by a group of pioneering Hip Hop DJs, during a conference at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.

Before he passed, he asked his 10 yr. old daughter, Nyra, who was the most interested, of his children, in DJing to take over for him as a DJ. She agreed!

With a very aggressive swagger on the turntables, those who knew Roc Raida were floored by his humbleness. His wife, Tyeasha reports, His notoriety amazed him every day! He never took that for granted. Williams was also known to be very quiet, private and easy going. His self-control was commendable unless he was pushed to his limit and then he would roar. In fact, Lord Finesse called his friend the quiet lion for this very reason. Those closest to him have the pleasure of remembering him also as a hilarious comedian, loving to joke and laugh.

Roc Raida through battles, performances, videos, dvds and even a Pepsi commercial, influenced thousands of DJs, both to party rock as well as to battle and he took several aspiring DJs under his wing to mentor personally. As a member of legendary turntablist crews, The X-Men and The X-ecutioners, he along with his brothers-in-vinyl took the world by storm, innovating, influencing and inspiring at every turn. In 2006, to progress and contribute to the Hip Hop DJ battle scene, he founded Roc Raidas Gong DJ Battle, a national DJ battle that occurs annually, combining head to head turntablist dexterity with comedy and drama.

Not only was he a World Champion DJ, he was a dedicated father and husband.

Anthony leaves to cherish his memories; his loving wife: Tyeasha Williams; three beautiful daughters: Asia, Nyra & Tia; one son: Earl Tyric Smiley; mother: Brenda Williams-Bolling; his step-father: Clarence Bolling; mother-in-law: Clarice Powell; father-in-law: Deryl Hunt; sister: Tamneka Bolling; 2 brother-in-laws: Willie Neat & Keith Powell; 3 aunts: Arlene Tramble, Jacquline Knox of FL, & Jacquline (Donald) Tramble; 1 god-sister: Tina Carter; Adoptive Grandmother: Juanita Jackson and a host of cousins & dear friends.

Anthony is now reunited with his grandparents, Deacon Early & Helen Williams & his Aunt Minister Carol Knox.

The family would like to acknowledge these amazing "God-sends". They have truly been Tye's backbone throughout this ordeal. To: Henley "Pro" Halem, Sean C, Fat Man Scoop, Busta Rhymes, DJ Premier and Christie Z. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!!!

The family would like to expressly thank Chatman-Harris Funeral Home in Baltimore MD as well as Mount Neboh Baptist Church in Harlem NY for their generosity and kindness.

All accurate information, official tributes and fundraisers (approved by his family) will be posted at:

--------------------------------------

As one of the Godfathers of Hip Hop, this is a tremendous loss to the Dj community. Its sometimes rare to meet an individual who was a supertalent, be so mild mannered and so calm. His skill level was admired worldwide. It was pleasure to see him in action. It was a pleasure to know him. I give my condolences to his family. - Grandmaster Flash

My heart is in pain over the passing of a good friend. Hes like a brother to me because he holds the same values I hold when it comes to my family, friends, music and life. He will be missed but not forgotten. I will keep his wife and children in my prayers. Rest in Peace Grand Master Roc Raida! GrandWizzard Theodore

Roc Raida was an innovator on the turntables at a time when we thought the best of the best had been seen. His artistic wizardry seemed so effortless it reminded me of a young GrandWizzard Theodore. His easy going attitude was a pleasure to see in a time where most artists of his caliber were big headed. Salute young general and RIP to our latest Grand Master! - GrandMaster Caz

"The Lord is forming his band right now. He called home Michael Jackson. But he was missing a DJ that could match the skill level as Michael. So he called upon Grandmaster Roc Raida." - DJ Scratch

Since the day I met Raida, he was the most humble, strong willed, genuine, ultimate competitor. The greatest DJ in my book. - Lord Finesse

Grand Master Roc Raida was one of the greatest DJs to ever touch a turntable. To guys like myself and Craze who came up right after the monumental generation of X-Men, ISP and Beat Junkies, Raida was the ultimate inspiration as a battle DJ. For those who knew him personally, Raida was also the kindest, more generous and funniest friends we had. He was like a mentor to me, I can't even count the amount of times he helped me out over the years. I feel like I just lost a big brother. He will be sorely missed. DJ A-Trak
